Here's some information I received from someone regarding the check engine light: I did have a Check Engine Light that kept coming back after being 'reset'. Turned out to be an EGR problem that was throwing an "insufficient flow, EGR" code. In any case, after 3 visits to non-Ford 'tune-up' shops who went after the EGR valve, I read up on the Serious Explorer message board and determined that it was the EGR differential sensor ( something like that). Apparently, a very common failure with many Fords (the small-town dealer had 36 in stock.....that says something). I don't believe that there's a 'fix' that could remedy the problem as opposed to purchasing the new $65 sensor/valve. **************** Let me know if this helps. Regards, Duane Harrison

Learned about your site from the Explorer group at Yahoo. Pictures are clear and sharp. I have yet to have any of the problems you describe (96EB) What maintainance do you do? Some people (DrBob on his site) recomend very extensive work - pulling prop shaft, lubing splines, dismantling 4wd hubs, cleaning, lubing, etc. I have yet to do any of that, just normal oil changes, coolant flush, filters, etc. - 60k miles..

I do the minimum maintenance necessary...I do try to change the oil every 3000 miles. I should probably be a little more aggressive on my maintenance such as coolant flushes. I need to be better about rotating my tires...I always end up with "cupping" on the tires due to lack of rotations (Ford's are notorious for that, I'm told). I've been advised that I should rotate the tires every other oil change (however, we put 3000 on the car pretty fast...it gets to be too much to rotate the tires when I'm doing these oil changes myself...and still have some quality time with the kids).

Steve - On Grand Marquis with power ant, I fully extended it, cleaned it thoroughly, and sprayed sections with silicone lube. Ran it up and down a few times, now fine. I put a little silicone lube on both that one and my Explorer ant. at every wash now. Motor oil would lube better, but attract too much dirt. George

Akin to the door ajar sensor problem, my door open chimes ring all the time the door is open keys-in ignition or key-out of ignition. They used to be quite when the door was open but keys were not in the ignition. I pulled the fuse but this kills the interior lights also!!! Holding a generous donation awaiting a comment.

If you have a SOHC engine and have a strange noise @ cold start up .... email me for the fix..... if you have less than 72000 miles the dealer will fix it for you if you "know what to say " Will trade fixes with you guys, my radio display is not working. (p.s.) it's listed in Oasis

I am having a problem with my auto door locks. At first I could use my keyless entry and all the doors would unlock but know only the drivers front & rear will unlock. I was thinking that I could lube the parts under the door panel but was not sure how to get into them with out breaking something. Your help is greatly appreciated. Here is the problem. When I have either the a/c or vent on and I apply the throttle, the air shifts to the defrost vents. This happens when the thermostat is on cold or hot. Someone suggested it might be a vacuum hose, but which one and how do you get to it? Let me know if your familiar with this problem and know of a fix.

I OWN A 2002 FORD EXPLORER THAT HAS A PROBLEM. THE REAR END MAKES A WHINING SOUND BETWEEN THE SPEEDS OF 45 TO 65 MPH. THE RING GEAR AND PINION GEARS HAVE BEEN REPLACED AT 10,000 MILES. I checked out your Won't Idle section and I was having the exact same problem on a 1999 Explorer 4.0L SHOC 2WD. Your tip seems to have solved the problem and it took all of 15 minutes. Much better than all day at the dealer and $200. Thanks!!

I Have a problem with my heater/ac control that I have not been able to fix. All I get is hot air, even with the Temp controler all the way in the blue, no matter what vent position I have it in. The only time that I can get somewhat cool air is if it is in Max A/C and even than it's not that cold. I've tried replacing the temp control potentiometer switch on the instrument panel, but that didn't work. I have traced back and it appears that all my vaccum lines are working to allow the individual vents to open and close, however I did notice that there is also a vaccum accuated, I will assume a ball valve that is tied into the heater supply line prior to going into the fire wall to the heatre box. It appears that this valve stays fully open unlees in the Maz A/C mode, not sure if this is part of the problem. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions as to what might be cauing this problem? My son drives a 99 explorer sport 4.o o.h.c. that won,t pass Ca. smog. The tech. person said it will have to be taken to the ford dealer. He said the catalitic converters are the problem. I am having a problem with a buzzing sound when i use my right turn signal. The signal light will come on with slight prompting and holding it at a certain position. Also, my tail lights won't come on. The fuses have been changed and so have the bulbs but to no avail. Also, my remote to unlock and lock the doors will not work with the doors. I have a 2000 Explorer XLS that has been trouble free up to this point. This morning I had a hard time starting it up. After it started it sounded like it was gasping for air along with rough idling. Once I put it in gear it shut off. I tried this several times and each time it did the same thing. When it finally kicked over it idled very rough. i have a 97 ford explorer that has a am\fm\cd player. The front stereo doesn't display any lights and none of the controls work except for the on/off knob. However the controls in the rear will work; changes stations, presets, etc. My question is are there separate fuses for the front that would prevent the main stereo from working?

I have a '95 Explorer 4.0L. It is leaking anti-freeze from a "part" that is connected to the two heater hoses coming from the firewall. The part has two hoses on each end... that part has a vacumm hose plugged in on top. Is the seal replacable or just replace the whole part? 1999 Explorer XLT 4X4 Air Bag dash light flashes many times and then stays on. This indicates that air bags are not working. Read on internet that sensor under the front seats may be casusing this problem. Some owners have Ford repair this problem (at great expense) and later problem returns again. If ford hooks computer up it says the code for front seats sensor (resistance) is not correct. I tried reseating the sensor wire under the drivers seat but nothing. On a Ford recall for two other fixes (not related to this) after they pluged the car into their computer it reset something and the air bag sensor worked correctly for about a week, but then the problem returned again. Ford charges a lot of money to plug their computer into the car; and I don't trust Ford dealers anyway. Looking for trustworthy shade tree person, but need to know before hand how to fix it.. I was recently given a 1993 Explorer. The front break pads were metal to metal after 500 miles. I went to change out the pads, and broke 2 c-clamps, trying to push the piston down. Does this model require a special tool, or is the piston just locked out?

Hope you can help, I have a '96 exlporer that makes a very high pitched whine when idling hot, it usually goes away when you accelerate. No kind of check engine light, it varies from barely noticeable to very loud, same basic pitch, though. problem with diagnosing this is that it doesn't make the noise all the time which makes it hard to pinpoint. Seems like you can hear it through the air intake at the front of the engine.

I wanted to tell you that I have a 99 Explorer and I was having trouble with it not wanting to start up, it would try to crank up but then just die, and die! Come to find out all it needed was the air filter cleaned. I Have a few friends that had the same problem. Just wanted to share the info.

We hit the bottom of our 2002 Ford Explorer yesterday on a piece of 2" X 6" wire on a cattle guard. The Explorer shut off and now won't even turn over. The inside lights, and automatice windows are working, but the gauges are not. HELP!!!!

Just bought a 2001 Explorer Sport (4.0 SOHC) with factory remote and keypad. I'm sure you know where this is going. The 2001 is the first year of the new body style, although I can say it has not changed much on the inside (I owned a 2000 brand new). Here's the question: I need to know where I can find the factory 5 digit keypad code for the driver's door. It is NOT in the following places: glove box, door/liftgate jambs, jack storage. I have a 1997 ford explorer limited awd, the alarm or security system on my vehicle as well as the open and close doors with the transmitter has failed or that is to say, is not working. It did initially. I have only one key. I purhased the vehicle used. The owner said, that he lost the other key and the two transmitter that came with the car. he gave me one transmitter and one key for the vehicle. the the keyless entry pad works fine. the driver's side door will not allow unlocking with the key. the passager door and the hatch back will open with the key. do I need to get another key from the ford company and is there a chip in the key. do I have to buy a new transmitter and have the ford dealership program the transmitter to open and lock the doors and set the security system. thank you Eric

I have a 2000 explorer (eddie bauer). The stereo control panel in the rear has come loose and has recessed slightly inside the console. I cannot figure out how to get into this area to try and fix it. I have a 6-cd changer inside the console. Wasn't sure if this has to come out. How do you get to the area where the rear controls are? Is this something I can fix? Rear controls still work, but have come loose and have recessed slightly.

The factory door unlock code for the keypad is in the left panel of the cargo area where the jack is located. You have to get a flashlight and look ih the panel up towards the front and the 5 digit number will be on a piece of tape on the computer module. I hope this helps. Does anyone know anything about the right blinker on a 95 making a buzzine sound when turned on and not working until you turn it off and on again? Thank you in advance for any help.

For the question about knowing the number of the keypad. I had same problem just got my 2000 last week. You go in the back of the vehicle. Open drivers side compartment. In there you will find a box. This is for your remote locks. If you look in there at an angle you will see a white label on there. There will be a 5 digit number all by itself. It's a lot bigger then the rest of them. this is the original keypad number even if someone has another number personalized, original number will work. you can also program your own number to work. But first you will have to reset keypad. I don't have my book here. so email me if you have a question.

oops i guess I should have looked at all the posts first. anyways, about the blank radio screen. I fixed today. Just go to walmart, and buy ford radio pullers. right by the stereo section. Just put in the four holes. and pull towards you. you might have to pull levers opposite of one another to get clips to close enough to get radio out. Next slide out and disconnect harnesses and radio antenna. all harnesses different so can't plug back in wrong. after radio is out. Just take off the black 2 screws holding the front display on. carefully take and pry the four tabs holding display in. once loose, disconnect wire harness from display to main radio assembly. If you look closesly at pins opposite of display you will see two on one side that look a lot darker. Mine had no solder on those two points. if you get a magnifying glass will help to solder back. when you solder back do'nt worry about getting it on both pins. I was afraid at first but looked at actual board and saw they form together in a T. just did that and mine's back on track. I read in a different web site about this and the guy said it worked for a year, so hopefullly mine will last longer. but no biggie easy job if you know how to solder. remember this is for a 2000 explorer mine doesn't have anti theft. Don't know if some do.

Hi! I recently just fixed my catalyst converter on my 97 Ford Explorer and the guy who fixed it didn't reprogram the vehicle. The light came on again for check engine and now, my Explorer won't start. When I put the key in the ignition it makes a noise like how you start a car but it just doesn't crank up. Could the problem be the catalyst converter not being reprogramed in the cars computer or another problem like alternater or starter. I don't know much about SUVs...please help me. Thank you!

I own a 1991 explorer, 2wd, V6. The engine won't turn over. It isn't the starter relay, starter solenoid, or the starter. The computer gives a code of 111 which is pass. When the key is turned to the start position, you hear 1 click, until you let go. The battery is brand new all of the fuses / relays are good and I am running out of ideas. Anyone have any ideas.

1991 Ford f 150 The fuel pump for each tank continues to pump with the engine off. I have to disconnect the Battery cable to shut down the pumps. I assume it is the Fuel pressure valve that is falty. I have a 1999 Explorer with the OHV engine. The check engine light is on and the local garage diagnosed it as a speed sensor in the auto trans. The transmission shop checked and said that the sensor seemed to check out OK. He said he could rebuild the trans. for $1400 with a new sensor, but I am not positive that this will solve the problem. Any ideas?

I have a 96 Ford Explorer 2WD 4.0L manual transmission. My problem is the oil pressure guage drops to nothing. I thought it was the sending unit...changed that and still no pressure. Obviously it is either the oil pump or the pump filter. I have a '98 Explorer with a driver side door lock problem. It sometimes won't unlock at all regardless of which method I use; ie. passenger door, rear door, driver door. I am trying to remove the door panel to see what is going on (I lucked out and got the door open today). Any advice on how to remove the door panel without damage?? Or any advice on repairing the lock/door handle mechanism? I have been climbing in the passenger door and sliding over and it's getting ridiculus. Any tip is appreciated.

I have a 1997 Explorer w/129,000 miles. After getting new tires I started to notice a rythamic vibration at city speeds. Lately the vibration has become noticeable at highway speeds. The tire shop says the tires are ok but the rear end is going. Is this plausable or should I get a second opinion? If it is the rear end is it worth getting fixed (the car has been very reliable and is otherwise in excellent shape)?

There also are other times when I am driving down the freeway at 70 - 80 mph and it will shut off and come to a stop. I am a girl and I need your help. I have a used 1996 Ford Explorer XLT 2 wheeled drive, and have major problems but little money to spare. My check engine light has been on for 2 years now and I cant get it to turn off. I have ran tests; they say it is the egr valve.... fixed it and things where good for a short while... then it came back on. My car also idles rough and my dome lights at one point would not turn off for 2 days so i had to take out the bulbs becuase they started melting the metal. Is this all interconnected? If not just tell me what the deal is with my check engine light. I hate my car I wish someone would have told me Explorer stood for Ford Explode before I bought the damn car. And also before I take up your entire web page my ABS light sometimes comes on and stays on for 2 days at a time then turns off by itself. I have a 1998 ford explorer 2dr sport 4X4. The driver side door lock has started acting up by not unlocking either with the keyless entry, touch pad, or using the key. In addition, the inside unlock button will not unlock it and pulling of the handle will not unlock or open it. My wife drives it and she is virtually locked in once the automatic door lock engages when she puts it in drive. Is there a quick fix without going to the dealer, or is there a way to turn off the automatic locking feature so we can just leave it unlocked? I removed the door panel and have looked at everything, but I cannot find a problem.

The drivers side power window on my 1995 ford explorer gets down and won't go up. I found the "secret 3rd bolt" that holds the window motor and removed the motor. Pushed the switch and the motor worked fine. Reinstalled the motor and window worked. About a month later had the same problem and repeated procedure and window works again. It just revs as if it's in neutral, I played around with the selector trying to find a gray area but no luck. Also at the same time the "reverse" went out, the car won't kick into overdrive. It just acts as if it was in regular "d" mode. Do you think it could be a stuck check ball or something? Maybe a servo? Please help!

While driving @ steady 60 mph, the engine suddenly lost power. no ck engine light.Pulled to shoulder and found that the engine would idle normally but when throttle was opened engine would not rev but stumble. When throttle was released rpms returned to normal idle. With the maf disconnected the engine performs normally although there seems to be a drop in mpg. I installed a new maf but it wouldn't even idle. However this may have been due to my neglecting to clear old maf readings from the cmu. Do these symptoms suggest that the maf is bad, and should the cmu be cleared before replacing with new maf.1994 Ford explorer 6 cyl 5speed 4x4 Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I have a 91 Mazda Navajo(Ford Explorer)one in the same. Anyway, I get in to leave work and click click. Can hear the relay and the starter engaging but not cranking over the engine. I've taken the starter off and engaged to see if it was working. It's kicking out the gear but not rotating. Any idea what it is? I've replaced the starter only to have identical results. The battery is good, I've cleaned all cables on battery and relay. I made sure the engine wasn't locked up. Is this the relay?

HI I am having the same problem with my 92 explorer it was running rough so i took a look an found the back bottom vacuum valve missing too. But according to the manual it is suppose to go to the 1/4 inch port for vacuum reservoir/EGR. Now, If any of you know what that is please let me know, because like you I have looked for a hanging hose someplace and haven't found onw. I did plug mine up too, but, it still runs bad. Not as rough as before but it seems to be missing something.

Hi all, I just bought a 2001 Explorer Sportrac last week. I have driven a Chevy S-10 ZR2 Widetrac for 5 years, brand new and the Sportrac is riding very different. I noticed that there is a vibration when driving between 20-40 mph. This vibration also occurs when I am at a stop and putting it in reverse or forward as I try to park the vehicle. Any ideas? I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sportrac. The check engine light is on and will not go off. Also, little by little the blinkers, and brake lights are going, depending on the tilt of the steering wheel. Now when I put on my blinker, it blinks rapidly and is making a whirring sound. The bed makes a constant squeak, and there is a continuous whinning sound as I'm driving along. My 99 Explorer Ltd has the airbag light illiminated on the dash (off & on). According to the dealership, I need to have and AirBag Overlay Harness and the shorted wires replaced. The current configuration is that the wires run underneath the carpet , but now they will replace the above and run the wires under the console. Is this not considered a manufacturer Defect, otherwise, why would they be relocating the wires at a cost of $447? They say the wires are melted.. And they say my vehicle will NOT pass MA inspection.

Great Website, I have a '91 Explorer with a fuel leak. It only leaks sometimes and only on cold starts. The leak occurs where the fuel line meets the engine on the front-top and the fuel collects on top of the engine. I would say its a bad fuel line, but it doesn't leak all the time, only occassionally (on cold starting). Do you have any ideas? Thanks

While driving home on Friday, I suddenly smelled something like hot antifreeze or burning oil. I thought it was one of the cars next to me and the fumes were drifting into my vehicle. As it turns out, the smell was most likely some kind of electrical burning as I discovered my driver side window suddenly stopped working. At first, the window went down when I was trying to get the smell out of my truck, and the window went right back up no problem. Now, it won't go down at all. Other window and all other electrical systems are working normally. I'm assuming it's the window motor. How complicated is it to buy a new window motor myself and install it?

Rear window wiper problems. I've read a previous posting that told me all one has to do is jiggle the rear wiper to reset the switch and it will start working. I've done that in the past, but it keeps dying on me, and the jiggling doesn't always work. Sometimes it will start working if I open and shut the liftgate or rear window. I have a '99 Ford Explorer. The check engine light is on constantly. The idle is rough. When I initially turn it on it races to 2500 RPM, and then backs itself down. Also it has started to overheat according to the temp gauge...but it gets hot and then it cools to normal and keeps cylcling from hot to normal. I just bought a a 2003 Explorer Sport 4x2 XLS, it has the keyless door entry. I came without an owner's manual. How can I find out what the factory default code is? Also, I received only one key with the vehicle. The local Ford dealership tells me that a second key will cost around $30 and another $50 to reprogram the vehicle. Hi I have a problem with my 2000 Ford Explorer. When applying the brake pedal in routine driving, I hear squeeking noises coming from the brake pedal. I can't pin point where its coming from but when I looked under the dash I noticed where a rubber covering covers a rod that goes into the front hood it appears it could be coming from there? I have a 1994 Ford Explorer that has a transmission problem with high temperatures and steep grades. On hot summer days driving over mountain passes the transmission blows fluid. It only happens on hot summer days and not during cooler days. I up-graded the Tansmission cooler, but I have not had time to test it going over a mountain pass. The other potential problem might be the front seal, that only leaks when there is a load on the tourque converter. Any suggestions?

The Misses was driving on the highway doing about 55-60 mph and the engine shut down and all the systems shut down. She set by the road side about 5 min. and the vehicle started and she drove it home. After driving home she said it drove as if the emergency brake was on and check to make sure the emergency brake was off as she was driving home. My wife's 2001 Explorer is making a poping in the front end drivers side I think it is the cvc joint on the 4x4 it has a shimmy and gets worse the faster you travel. It makes the pop sound going forward or back wards with the wheel turned to the left sharply. Hi, great sight by the way. I have a 99 XLT Exp. We too expericanced the Idling problem and would like to know what AIC stand for and if it’s something any guy can do? Also this is a problem that is just irritating me to no end what is the problem with the radios all my light have gone out and the dealer wants $600 to fix it. My friends tell me to just go out and buy another one but this was the $1000 Bose up grade system. Does anyone know of a recall or some way to get them to fix it? Hi, I have a 97 Ford Exploder, V-6, auto trans, 4 wd drv. It has an intermittened with starting. The starter works fine as the engine is sounding like it is trying to start but it won't. It sounds like it is an ignition problem. Sometimes it will start fine then other times it requires 10 minutes or more of attempts. It has stranded me on a few occations. The guy from the auto club conducted an diagnostics on it and it comes up at times as the security alarm. This is a factory installed security alarm that will put an inhibitor in the ignition system if the truck isn't started within a certian time after you use the electronic key to open the door. Yes, if you use the manual key to open the door, the horn/alarm will sound if you attempt to start the truck. Oddly enough when the truck is drug to the dealer everythig is fine and they can't find the problem. Does anybody knows how to disable this security system so the truck will start? The real reason why I want to know is I will sell the hunk of crap as soon as it will consistantly start. I vow never, ever to buy another ford again reguardless of how good a deal it seems. This is the second and last! I really miss my Chevy Blazer and Camaro.

Am I getting taken to the cleaners? 1996 Ford Explorer Sport. Mechanic's comments from CA Smog test. "Checked system for codes, had code P0420 for Catalyst efficiency and PO401 for EGR system flow at idle, found cracked vacuum line, repaired line and vehicle started running rough ("rough ha!..like doesn't run at all"..). Did intrussive test on converter, converter is working properly. Checked EGR Solenoid, has constant power and ground causing vacuum to flow through to EGR. Checked 02 sensors, working properly and no glitches. EGR passages are partially restricted." Mechanic indicates I need to purchase a new computer and clean EGR passages. If that doesn't work, I'll have to replace catalytic converter. Estimated cost (including labor) Computer $365; EGR Carb Cleaner $6; EGR Valve $90; R/R ECM $72 (add'l $500 if Catalytic Converter required). After they "fixed" the cracked vacuum line, car will not run. (I politely asked them to break it again since my car was running fine before, but I guess then I don't get to pass the smog test.) I found: If you unplug the vacuum line with EGR plugged in, car runs. If you unplug EGR with vacuum plugged in, car runs. Went to Auto Zone Auto Supply Store and borrowed their OBDII thing-a-ma-diggey and plugged into computer under steering shaft(only had to leave my driver's license to use the machine...cheap solution). Code reads P1409 with EGR unplugged which makes sense. HOWEVER, if I plug the EGR and vacuum thing back in, the machine says PASS, no codes returned. However, car won't run if the "fixed" vacuum line is plugged in. Does it sound like I need a new computer like they indicated? Also have the issue with A/C only working on Max, but I take it that isn't a computer problem. Oh, car is NOT running hot, but when it is 95+ degrees out, I get this low groaning kinda like a bus when I LET OFF the brake. Sound continues for a few minutes while driving. Sound tends to stop if I have heat or a/c blower on. What a mess! The GREAT thing about your site is...I'm not alone in these weird problems! Any help would be appreciated. Already paid $150 for one diagnostic (which resulted in a vacuum line repair which made my car not run). Hate to pay another $150 for a second opinion and haven't even started to fix the problem! Is a computer or EGR hard to replace? Actual parts just run $130 and $41. Smog test results only failed on NO(PPM) test. Max at 15 mph 494, ave 82, ME 833; at 25 mph Max 747, ave 74, ME 873. HC (PPM) and CO% well within passing range). I picked up some of that "Guaranted to Pass Emission Test Formula" stuff today and put it in with a full tank of gas, but don't think it will help too much until the EGR/vacuum problem is fixed. NOSPAM Hi There! I am having a few problems with lights on my 1998 Ford Explorer XLT. The headlights stopped working, however the parking lights work and the high beams only work if I pull them toward me but they won't stay on if I release the handle. THe bulbs are fine. The second thing is a few months ago the third brake light at the top started flickering and stays on even when the truck is off. Now the other two brake lights just stopped working. '92 Explorer, got real hot in Oklahoma ~100 degrees. My daughter called from the local sonic and said oil is dripping. When I arrived I could see the trail of oil. I have a 2001 ford explorer sport and it wanders all over the road, and it is very bad in the wind. It's been in to the dealer twice and the problem is still there. There is only 32,000 miles on it. My daughter and I were involved in a front end collision in my 2002 Ford Explorer. Despite over $6600 in damage to my front end, neither the driver nor the passenger side airbag deployed. The EMS driver and the wrecker both said given the extensive damage to the front end of my vehicle the air bags should have deployed. My daughter and I both suffered significant injuries. I do not know how fast I was going upon impact. I was traveling 60 mph before slamming on my brakes when a car pulled out in front of us. The dealership that did the repairs on my vehicle could offer no explaination for the air bags failing. My question is, when should the air bags deploy and is my car safe to drive given I could not get an explaination as to why the air bags failed in the first place. I was told they were fine but how do I know for sure?

I am wanting to change the front brake pads on my 1993 Explorer, but I do not see any bolts that hold the caliper on the spindle. All I see is two tension pins (two straight c-channeled pieces that look like they hold the caliper in place with tension on each other). I just let my friend borrow my explorer and there is a problem with the hood latch. The hood will not close with the primary latch. The secondary works fine, but the hood will not latch properly with the primary latch. The release mecanism works fine, but I could not detect a reason for the hood to not latch. I have a 92 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 with 137,500 miles. My oil pressure seems too be running too low, it fluctuates usually running in a lower pressure than normally the car would run .The car has always run fine except for some tappet noise.When I first bought the car the pressure would run with in the "normal" on the letter A or L on the gauge.Now the car runs on the N of the gauge. The gauge will also read between the letters R and L on the "normal" guage. These things all seem to happen at random times.

Hello, I have a 91 Ford Explorer Sport, When I try to start the engine I hear some ticking noises like as if the Starter is bad or going bad but then when I try to start it back nothing happens at all, No ticking, No lights, No horn etc... everything goes dead for about a minute or two then everything returns back to normal but the Truck still doesn't start. I have change the Starter twice the solenoid, the upper Ignition switch, plugs, and battery. The truck would sit this way for afew days then it would start and work fine for two Weeks are more and after the first rain strom and temperture drop the truck is back to the same thing.. My 98 ford explorer has hot air coming out of the vents all the time. If I run max air I can get cold air, but otherwise there is HOT air coming out of the vents. Soomeone told me the cycle switch may be bad. What is involved with changing this out IF you think that is the problem?

The car, if in good condition, is worth $2800 and a rebuilt engine is about $2400 installed. Have any recommendations? Changed my auto transmission filter the other night. Filter is a Purlator, kit included a shorter mounting screw and no washer is used. Now car seems stuck in second gear. Car has 120K mi. I went to AutoZone and they told me it was an Exaporative Emmission Control code that came up and suggested i change my fuel cap, which i did. The lighs keep coming on and going off what should I do? Sounds like i came to the right place. We have an '02 Explorer with the ERG problems stated from other owners. Now we have transmission problems. Ford dealer want $400 just to "open the pan" and check it. I have a local transmission guy who has to order a special adaptor from California just to get it open--however he says that '02 and up are experiencing "cylinder pack" problems?? It goes in tomorrow 7-26. Let me know if you have heard anything.

I have been having problems with my 1994 explorer. It has been running rough, and tha auto shop hooked it up to a comp. and it said low voltage at the egr position switch. I was checking the wires for any short and now it doesn't start at all. It doesn't seem to be getting any fuel. The pump makes no noise when ign. is on. Could I have shorted something out when I was checking the other problem? Hopefully it is not the pump. what can I check to see what is wrong? Don Morris

I have a 1994 Ford Explorer and it's getting hard to shift into 1st and 2nd while starting from a stopped position. Someone mentioned trying to bleed the slave cyclinder on the hydralics. Could this help? I can put it in reverse and move it a few feet and it might go into gear fine. It's like it won't mesh ..... but it works fine while driving and shifting on the road.

Hi, I just bought my second Explorer and got a heck of a deal. It's a real fixer-upper though. One of the problems is one I've never personally seen. When the brakes are applied, there's a hissing or blowing noise coming from the brake pedal area. By researching and asking of people in the field, I've narrowed it down to the vacuum hose of the power brake unit. I've been told that there's a check valve that often goes bad. My driver side rear blinker or break light does not come on. The passenger side rear works fine and so does both front blinkers. I tried the fuses, they are fine, I tried new bulbs and that doesn't work. What could be the problem? I ran out of gas in my 2000 Ford Explorer. Shortly there after, I noticed that the engine was revving higher and the shifting between gears seems labored. Could it be related to a confused fuel sending unit? The truck has 67,000 miles. It also overheared a bit, but came down to 80%. My 1996 Explorer Sport 4.0 liter, manual transmission has had trouble shifting into first gear since we got it with 70,000 miles on it, especially when stopped. Now that it's nearing 100,000 miles, 2nd gear seems to be having trouble also. I've heard that there is some expensive synchro problem with these transmissions that requires complete overhaul. I think I have a thermostat or water pump problem. I get a block down the road and the temp shoots up fast and I had to turn around before it blows. The top hose is hard but the bottom is not. The radiator itself after I turn the vehicle off, vibrates and knocks as it is cooling. I think it is because of the pressure but any help would be great. My airbag light keeps coming on in my 99 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer but sometimes it does not. The dealership said I needed a new airbag hammock(?) but when I took it to my own mechanic, he reset the system to see if it would reset or come back on immediately and it did not come back on for about two months. Since it is random at times, I am wondering if there is a problem with the wiring. I have had other "poltergeist" problems that no one can figure out, including the dealership. This includes my head lights coming on/off randomly. 1998 Explorer, 4.0 SOHC, 101K miles. Dealership wants to REPLACE the engine because the crank pulley worked loose and destroyed its keyway, effectively welding itself in there... The pulley does wobble; I saw it. However, different dealer replaced the harmonic balancer at 90K miles...Don't the two (harmonic balancer and the crank pulley) go together? Is the second dealer negligent for not properly re-installing the crank pulley?? Not torquing it properly??? Something?? They had the engine completely torn apart for the timing chain replacement also...Help!

Hi. I have a 1994 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer with almost 300,000 miles. Today, my car started overheating. I pulled over and found the valve used to distribute air was not attached. Actually, the previous owner used PVC pipe to connect the hoses. I purchased the $7.00 replacement part and installed it. Now I'm having problems with it starting. Could it be the alternator has gone bad? It also still overheats. Could I have a shot thermostat now? The other thing that occurred this weekend was my battery is discharging. I am having problems with my Check engine light for my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. I went to Auto zone and they did the free OBDII diagnostic and I came up with "low EGR air flow" or something of that nature. I spent around 65 dollars for new EGR valve, gasket etc. and about 20 minutes (taking my time) to change it out. Had fault code reset and 4 days later light came back on. Did diagnostics again, same code. Now I'm thinking DPFE, but was told to clean out the tubes leading to EGR valve. I did that, and now vehicle runs worse. It is still driveable, but idles rough. After looking on internet, read about EVR (voltage regulator?) which tubes from EGR connect to. Surely this isn't the same thing as a DPFE. If not, where is the DPFE located? Readings on the net are somewhat vague. any help would be appreciated.

I have a problem and was wondering if anyone has any idea on what is wrong with my 98 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer. Well for a few weeks now when I start it up it will start but it seems to take a little longer than usual to actually turn over, not too long but you really have to use some force on the key. But the real problem I'm having is that once I turn the car off it won't restart right away which is really annoying especially when you just need to fill it up with gas and have to sit at the pump for 10 minutes until it will finally restart. Sometimes it has to sit for atleast a half an hour but even then it doesn't want to start. I can't really go anywhere except to work and back because it won't restart until after a while. Does it sound like the starter or battery. I know very little about what could be causing it to only start after sitting for a while. Any help would be much appreciated... Thanks in advance

Has anyone else had any problems with the head on their Explorers? I have a 99 XLS 4.0 that had a crack between the valves on one of the heads. I ended uop having my mechanic replace both heads with a heavier gauge head from a reliable machine shop. Ford said they will not warranty or reimburse me until there is a recall since I am out of warranty on it. If anyone has has problems or suggestions please contact me.

1994 Explorer with 153,000 miles. Check engine light stays on Have checked the code reader and originally found inducated ERG sensor which I replaced. The code readings of recent is 111 and memory code is 214 which I was told is the ECM. ( Electronic Computer Modular) Have tried to remove the error code but not successful. The engine runs fine. have a 97 ford ranger if i put it in drive or 2nd or 1st it will die ...but if i put it in rev then kinda fast put it in 1st gear it will idle without dieing but if i put it in drive or second after i have it in rev it will die after i get going i manually shift the lever up to change gears ...but when i get to drive and have to brake it will only downshift if i kinda brake harder and faster then normal and i hear it downshift to 1st but whem i come to complete stop it dies it wont cluth to let me idle but if i manually put lever in 1st gear it will allow me to stop and idle with no problems and i do it all again to take off AND I HAD A FORD DEALER mechanic put code reader on it and there are no codes stored and now it has failed smog....also just before this happened i noticed if i made like a left bank turn it would sometimes slip like it went to neautral then it would catch again and have no problems did this maybe 5 times give or take and hasntr done it since this lockup problem 140,000 had tranny serviced 2 maybe 3 times and oil change every 3000 has the r4 tranny i think 3 speed with OD

I have a 91 explorer. The gas gauge when full registers full but the gauge will not go beyond half. I have replaced the sending unit and fuel pump unit and the gas gauge. When disconnected from the fuel pump the gauge goes to full. I tried grounding the wiring the gauge will only go to half. Thanks... LH

I get a strange roaring or deep "wind noise" (like a air filter clogged)after my 2000 explorer(OHV6) warms up. It does not seem to effect the engine...it is just very noisy. I have been told that the head gasket is leaking oil on my 1999 explorer eddie bauer, the leak is not that bad, I keep checking the oil level and it shows very little if any at all oil usage, in other word the oil level stays high. Should I worry about the leak now, since the ford company said they would have to drop the engine to repair it and that would cost me big bucks. Any suggestions on what I should do???

I have a 1996 Explorer 4.0 Eddie Bauer. 225,000 miles, mostly highway. Changed oil religeously. It has rough idle only after car has been driven 10-15 minutes, not rought idle when first starting up. Ford dealer says it is something in cylinder #6, possibly a valve. If so, why does it run smooth, normal upon start up? I changed Idle air control, plug wires, spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, and air filter, but the rough idle when warm still occurs. Jeff L in Milwaukee.

I got this site from Yahoo. Anyway, I have a 93ford explorer. I have a situation. My check engine light came on and the diagnostic said 02 sensor. I had that replaced and the next day I noticed white/gray smoke coming from tailpipe. It only happens in the morning for a few minutes when I start my car before work. Plus while starting, I hear a "passing gas" noise around the exhaust or cat at startup only. During the day, there is no smoke present. Any suggestions? HELP..!!!! I have a 96 explorer that recently began to idle rough and wants to die sometimes. I was going down the road at about 45mph and the rpms began to go down and then the engine died. No matter how much gas you pump into it, it justs continued to go down in RPM and then die. I waited about 5 minutes and then the engine fired up with no problem. I drove it home and it appeared to have all its oats back now. I get the rough idle quite often and the wanting to die symptom rarely. I Need Help please. What could it be...?

I HAVE A 2000 FORD WINDSTAR. THE A/C WILL BLOW, BUT HOT AIR. THE SPEEDOMETER AND THE ODOMETER STOPPED WORKING. I CHECKED THE FUSE PANEL AND FOUND THAT THE #10 FUSE WHICH IS A 10 AMP FUSE WAS BLOWN. Like the site, the only thing i can think of is a search feature.. i like the no pop-up's man i hate those sites.. Well here's my question.. i have a 92 ford explorer, and the rear doors neither latch will pop open now.. they seem to be frozen.. the outside latches are now busted from me and others forcing them, the interior handles sound like they are engaging the latch mechanism, but there is no poping of the latch.. I've even taken off the hinges trying to get in there with some WD and cannot seem to get them unfrozen.. What is my re-course besides the body shop.. anyone..? Thanks for any info.. chris

Hi! My 1994 Ford Explorer makes a funny ticking noise from the front end ( I believe) I just had the brakes all redone and tires rotated, as well as new manual hubs put on. Could any of these things be the ticking noise? I know it's not a motor noise. I can only hear it when I'm around cement or buildings, where it echoes, and I'm going about 40km per hour. Hi.I have a 94 Explorer 4.0L with 56k miles on it. The check engine light comes on typically after I drive it for about 2 miles or it comes on right away if the engine is warm. I get a 214 dtc code which is cylinder identification failure. I have replaced the ckp sensor but that did not help. It is the vin x model so it does not have the camshaft position sensor How can I narrow this problem down so I don't just keep replacing good sensors? Thanks, Rob

The problem: The car does not start because when I insert the key, the theft light comes on. keys have been flashed and the reader in the steering column has been changed. The car starts when the theft light goes out but that is only after the car has cooled down and I do not drive it for a while. I am thinking it is the power steering fluid needs to be changed. How do I do this because I have spent a fortune at the dealer already and it is still not fixed. I just paid close to 300.00 dollars to get the key reader changed in my 98 Ford explorer sport. The keys were flashed for 150.00 and did not stop the theft light from flashing which caused the car not to start (engine kill- factory autoguard). After they told me it was probably the transponder reader in the steering column, I was desperate and said O.K. It still does not work. Help!!!!

I filled 2003 sport trac with gas. When I went to start it, it stalled. Started it again and it ran ruff and tach was fluctuating up and down. Drove three miles to work and it lost almost all power going up a gentle incline. eased up on gas and it ran a little better. My A.C. was on but no cold air was coming out. There was also a sulfer smell from the exhaust. I parked at work and turned engine off, after a minute I started it again and now running great and A.C. is working again. I have a 2002 4X4 Ford Explorer XLT that has started making a terrible popping sound when turning the wheel (usually fairly sharply) right or left. It doesn't make the sound when going straight either forward or backwards but will make the clunking sound when turning either going forward or backwards. Today when backing up out of a parking space it didn't want to go and acted like it was going to "lock up" while popping hard. I am also noticing another smaller sound like plastic breaking coming from underneath. The front left wheel bearing was just recently changed but that has been checked to make sure everything was done correctly. What's kinda strange is this popping sound started after changing the wheel bearing. Any ideas? Thanks so much. Angie

I Have a 91 explorer. i think my fuel pump is out, but before replacing it, i want to get some advice on what else the problem could be. When i went to start it, it started, but barley ran. could not accelerate engine. now it won't start at all. turns over fine, and i am getting fire. i do not hear the fuel pump come on. just before this, after it was parked for about 30 mins or so, when i went out to it, i heard a humming sound. i beleive it was the fuel pump still running. could it have burned out or burned up another part. I just purchased a 2001 explorer and now no heat comes out of the heater, hose to core is hot, return is cold. I took it to the dealer and he said it was broken heater core. Car has 42000 miles. I see there is a service bulletin on heater cores. Dealer says it would cost $900.00 to fix. They also said dash needs to be removed? We have a 1994 Ford Explorer Eddie Baurer model. We are experiencing random engine start failure, we beleieve, due to faulty Anti-theft" electronics. What happens in, intermittantly, the explorer will not start. It cranks fine. We have approximately 116,000 miles on the Explorer. WE engage the "Dead-man" switch and wait a while, sometimes up to an hour, and the explorer will start. Off and on for the past year the frequency of this problem has been growing. Now it is real bother. We believe its a simple fix. But Ford repair shops pretend to dumb about the problem. You know the drill. leave it here we'll get back to you with the corrective action.

I had just bought a 98 ford explorer and I found the factory set code located on a white box in the rear compartment. (where the jack is located along with the rear wiper fluid) You might need to use a flashlight and a mirror but it is a 5 digit number. Hope this info works for you!

Hi Duane: I have a 1996 Explorer Eddie Bauer which I purchased last year at a dealer auction. It is wonderful. Recently, though, the rear passenger door wouldn't unlock automatically so my wife pulled up the knob in order to get out of the car. im gonna have my husband try this egr sensor thing. we have been trying to fix whatever is making the check engine light appear for a year. warning dont drive alot on an empty gas tank we had to replace the fuel pump a few months ago . also my electric windows every once in a while will do there own thing. and one morning i was going to work and i go to start the car and it wont start and it wont come out of park. well my husband comes outside looking at fuses and stuff and we figure out that my brake lights werent working. n-e way come to find out the car wont start if your brake lights arent working correctly. which was something i didnt know well i cant expect my car to work perfect b/c afterall it is a95 exployer with 167000 miles on it . iwonder how much longer it will last?

i have a '92 ford exployer 4.0 liter V-6. several months ago problem started.very rough idle when started after motor had cooled. idle so rough that car would die when put in gear. runs ok after it warms up. check engine light would come on and off when problem first started but now it has not came on for a few weeks. have replaced mass air flow sensor, oxygen sensor, idle control sensor, throttle control module, pcv valve, plugs, plug wires, intake fuel rail gaskets, air transfer tube between mass air flow sensor and intake, injectors cleaned and an o-ring on one replaced. car still idles very rough and dies when put in gear.diagnostic code shows 157 and 158, which is mass air flow reading too rich and too lean. this makes sense with the way that it idles, but why does it idel so rough? please tell me what could be wrong.

My 2000 Astro van's throttle appears to stick while driving. Yesterday I was driving down the road going 53 miles an hour without my foot on the gas and no the cruise control was not on. It will slow down but not at a rate that it should. Sometimes it won't slow down all, and sometimes it will slow to what sounds like normal RPM's. I don't know if it is associated with this problem or not but I believe about the same time that I started having the throttle problem I also noticed that the van was hard to start, like the battery was very weak. I have a '95 Explorer with the premium sound system. I am switching out the Radio/Cassette player and putting in a new CD player (not a factory CD play). I bought the adapter harness and have hooked up the new player. However, I get no sound. The Explorer has two connector assemblies, but unfortunately only one of the connectors still have the factory pinout label on them. The speaker connector harness has no labeling and I am wondering if perhaps the wiring is different than what the adapter harness says. I have a "95 Explorer, which will not turn-off the head/taillites, ignition on or off. On discovery, I pulled fuses on right headlite, left headlite, and tailites, till I could fix it. I assumed it was a switch, ( did not test) replaced switch only to have same thing happen, ignition on or off. I tried to find a relay, my Chilton does not show headlite/taillite relay location . My 2002 Ford Expolorer Limited rear liftgate glass shatered while in my driveway for no apparent reason. The glass seemed to crystalize. Has there been other reported incidence of this? Ford would not cover it even though the vechile is still under warrentee.

Hello, I already have access to your website and have an issue I need help with. I have a 2001 Explore sport and the rear wiper doesnt move. I sounds like the motor is working but the wiper doesnt move. The washer works. I've check the fuses, replaced the relays and motor and it still doesn't move. Any suggestions. I hear the relay and the motor clicking but the wiper doesn't move.

I just purchased a 2001 Ford Explorer and unfortunately, there was not an Owners Manuel. Can you tell me the best place to purchase one. I just bought a 1997 Explorer XLT 4WD at auction w/ 140K miles on the engine. I got it for $1325 if you can believe it. It has power everything and leather interior. The inside is in impeccable shape and everything seems to work fine (from a power stand point). I have a couple of issues with: I have what seems like a valve tap. Since this is a 6 cyl SOHC I was told only Ford can do the work. Is that true? What should I expect to pay for something like this. Next, I have some stickiness with the door locks. Can this problem be lubricated or do the locking mechanisms need to be replaced? Finally, the keyless entry system (door pad) is not working. Is this expensive to fix? Thanks

just bought 2004 used ford explorer 4.0 v6. keep hearing like a washing machine sound when driving. If i press on brakes it slows down. I took it back to dealer, they thought it is the tires which are Michelins. Can tires make sounds like that? Also, sometimes when i put in reverse and start backing, i get a hard thump like i have ran over something. could this be transmission? otherwise than that it drives perfect. please let me know asap. My 1999 Explorer XLT will not keep idling at a stopped position. I have added fuel injector cleaner and even tried adjusting the idle. Is there anything else I can try without going to the dealer? The ABS light has been on for about a year. Is this a sensor that needs reseting? The driver side door no longer locks or unlocks with the keyless entry or even the lock unlock button. I see all of these things seem common. Were these all defects from the factory? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Duane, I have a 1998 4.0 SOHC V-6 Explorer. The check engine light keeps coming back on after I reset it. The problem is start-up,it does not want to idle, but still does very erractically. After it warms up, it runs fine. I cleaned the IAC, that did no good. One shop told my wife it may need new igniters, and that could be $800. The reading from the diagnostic was not clear, guy really couldnt tell me, said it may be o2 sensor. Cold weather is coming back which means it will take even longer to warm up. Any suggestions would help. Thanks

HI, I have a 97 explorer. Could you give me your opinions on the constant check engine light. My heat is constant no cool except on max a/c. Where is the orfice in the a/c, up by drier tank or in lower line. I have a vacuum valve in the heater hoses that leaks could you tell what this part is called. Hello, I have a 1997 Ford Explorer SUV. I am having a problem with a buzzing sound when I use my right turn signal. The signal light will come on with slight prompting and holding it at a certain position. We replaced a relay but it has not fixed the problem. Any suggestions? My 2000 Ford F250 has a really nice am/fm/cassette/cd. The am has a terrible engine noise. The dealer wants to send it in to the factory. It seems there should be an easy fix. - Ron M.

I've been browsing the net to no avail. But here's my question; my 2000 Ranger is having a problem with the accelorator. When I first start my car and apply the accelorator it tends to give resistence or stick. Lately it's been getting worse and happening while I'm driving. This makes for a sticky sitaution with a manual as you could imagine. Any ideas?

I have a basic center console for a 99 ford explorer, but it broke and I bought a used upgrade center console but I don't know how to put it in. It has controls for the radio and heat/AC in the rear, I want to hook it up right though. It looks like it needs a wiring harness but I don't think there is one the truck for it do I hard wire it or try to find the harness. What do I do?

I have a 97 4.0 xplorer that at times will not start. It will crank fine, but no fire. I know its getting gas and has to be an electronic problem of some kind. This usually happens about once every three months and the next day everything is fine again. Would really like to take care of this problem before it leaves me stuck somewhere far, far, away. I see many of the same problems listed, but no solutions given. Sorry to ask the same old questions... Have a 2000 xlt 4.0 sohc 2x4. 1) How do I remove fuel filter w/o tearing it up? Bleed line pressure by removing fuse, starting engine? 2) The apparently very common, stuck power door lock syndrome. I've taken it apart, but it looks like it'd be next to impossible to replace anything inside there without losing a finger or two. and 3) Rear window wiper. Doesn't wipe. Fuse is good. I can't see the motor going bad before the switch(es). How to isolate/test? Any help you can give would be great!! Thanks.

I have a 2000 Ford Explorer XLS 4.0 6Cyl. automatic transmission with four-wheel drive. Every once in a while, the Overdrive Light begins to flash. It hesitates occasionally when shifting from second to third gear, (just slightly). If I am on normal highway conditions, everything seems to be fine, and no flashing light. But when I am going slow up and down hills, this is when the light begins to flash. Everything else seems to be fine, just this occasional hesitation and flashing light. Could it be a sensor, or something minor then having a complete transmission overhaul? Please provide insight. Thanks!

1997 ford e-250 van dtc scanner says po401 egr flow insufficient..... have replaced egr valve and egr sol valve... cleared codes and returns on 3rd start... checked all hoses ok...engine does have 228,000 miles on it.....when i put a vac. on egr valve it will shut down motor..when i changed egr valve the motor ideled better...poor gas millage,surgen when in overdrive.....give it the gas and she runs great.......ps 5.4l motor..... thanks for any help bill..

Own a '91 Explorer Sport 4.0l that probable has a blown head gasket or cracker right head. The coolant is burning out of the exhaust manifold and is rusting out the exhaust system. Could this clog up the convertor and restrick flow out of the exhaust system causing me to lose power? Have flushed the system and place Car Go glass sealer in the system to try and fix the leak, has anyone trid this and have it work?

I want to remove & replace the PCV valve on my 1999 Mercury Mountaineer (8 cyl.). I have the new part (to know exactly what it looks like) and I have replaced PCV valves on other cars, including Fords in the past, especially when it was so easy to find (at the top of the valve cover). I just cannot locate it anywhere on or near the visible parts of the engine of this vehicle. After reading generic instructions on where to find the PCV, I couldn't find it. I went to a couple of websites and saw other Q&As on the same subject, and still couldn't find it. Help!

Well I've got a '91 Navajo/explorer and i'm having a hard time finding what I want. I've just had all the body work done and now I'm moving to the interior. I'm trying to find the power window trim plates, the originals are all scratched and letters worn off.
